Why Canadians and Europeans Admire the United States
As a resident of Upstate New York, and later Houston, I have had the unique opportunity to experience both sides of the US-Canada border. In this article, I will share some of the reasons why Canadians and Europeans are drawn to the United States, highlighting aspects of its university education, geographic diversity, and rich cultural attractions.
Comprehensive University Offerings
One of the most compelling reasons for the admiration of the United States is the breadth and quality of its university education. The US boasts a wide array of high-quality institutions, both in terms of overall quality and the sheer number of schools. While there are certainly challenges, such as the student loan crisis and administrative inefficiency, the high points of US university education are unmatched.
Unique Experiences at American Universities
During my time in the US, I had the opportunity to experience a diverse range of activities on and off campus. For instance, I took up fencing and went on several hikes in the nearby forests. Though these pursuits were not cheap, they were well-managed, and they have left lasting memories and stories to cherish. This enriching experience contributed to my personal development and roundedness.
Schools like Princeton, MIT, and Stanford offer an abundance of courses that cater to a wide range of interests. The sheer number of options available at mid-sized universities can be overwhelming, leaving students to make tough decisions based on time constraints. However, the variety of subjects and activities provides a unique educational environment that fosters a well-rounded individual.
Geographic Diversity and Megaprojects
Another aspect that Canadians and Europeans admire is the geographical diversity of the United States. Cities like Houston, Tampa, Las Vegas, and Pasadena offer a unique blend of experiences that are not easily found in Canada. While none of these cities are perfect, they each offer distinct qualities that set them apart. For a rough approximation of Ontario's natural beauty, a short ferry ride to Detroit or Chicago can provide a similar experience.
Furthermore, the US is renowned for its ambitious megaprojects. While Canada has its share of large-scale projects, the US has achieved feats that seem almost impossible. For example, the Apollo missions, the Interstate Highway System, and the iconic Mount Rushmore stand as testament to the nation's engineering prowess. These projects are often more extensive and celebrated than those in other countries.
Political and Tourist Attractions in the US
The United States has a wealth of political and cultural attractions, particularly in and around Washington DC. The ability to explore the National Mall and Cleveland Park, home to the Smithsonian Institution, offers a free and enriching experience that is unmatched. This institutional wealth makes the US a hub for historical, artistic, and cultural exploration.
Well-Developed Air Travel Infrastructure
A lesser-discussed aspect that Canadians and Europeans often admire about the United States is its well-developed air travel infrastructure. Airfare is generally cheaper in the US, and there are multiple hubs in diverse cities like Detroit, Cincinnati, Minneapolis, and Seattle. My personal experience includes visiting four airports, each with its unique charm and amenities.
Compared to many European countries, the US has a more robust and competitive airline market. Cities like Detroit, Cincinnati, and Minneapolis serve as major hubs that facilitate easy connections and affordable flights. This extensive air travel network makes it easier for individuals to explore different parts of the country and offers a level of convenience that is not always available in Canada or Europe.
Admiration and Praise
Given the myriad of reasons why Canadians and Europeans can't help but admire aspects of the United States, it's difficult to deny the allure of everything from its academic institutions to its diverse geography and cultural attractions. Americans are not shy about pointing out these positive aspects, and it's clear that the US has much to offer those who visit, live, or study there.
So, while there may be challenges and shortcomings, it's important to recognize and appreciate the positive elements of the United States. From the diverse landscapes to the expansive university system and rich cultural offerings, the United States remains a country that captivates the hearts and minds of many.
