The Origins of Prague: A Journey Through Time

The city of Prague, situated in the heart of Europe, boasts a rich and complex history that dates back thousands of years. While the exact origins of Prague remain shrouded in mystery, archeological evidence and historical legends provide fascinating insights into the evolution of this captivating city.

Pre-Historic Settlements and Early Migrations

Human habitation in the area where Prague now stands can be traced back as far as one million years ago, according to some archeological findings. However, there is no evidence of a stable settlement during this period. In the first centuries of our calendar, a Roman trade route passed through the region, and from the 5th century onwards, Slavic tribes began to dominate the area. Several forts were established on the banks of the Vltava river to protect these routes and crossings.

The Legend of Praga's Foundation

The legend surrounding the foundation of Prague adds a romantic and intriguing layer to its origins. According to this legend, the city was founded in the 8th century by Libu?e, a visionary Slavic prophetess. In a now famous scene, Libu?e stands on the banks of the Vltava river and proclaims, 'Here I see a city whose fame will reach the stars.'

Libu?e was one of three daughters of the legendary Krok, a powerful proto-Czech figure. Her sisters were Teta and Kazi. Libu?e, finding the male aristocracy of the time to be weak and ineffectual, initiated a contest to determine the title of her future husband. The contest was a job competition, and the winner was Przemysl the Ploughman. They went on to establish the Przemyslid dynasty, which ruled Bohemia until the 14th century. Czechs' most beloved king, Charles IV, was a descendant of the Przemyslid lineage.

Archaeological Evidence and the City's Growth

The archaeological evidence of early settlements in the region is compelling. By the end of the 9th century, the Hrad?any area, which now encompasses the Royal Castle, had evolved into a fortified Slavic settlement. Other regions within what is now the city of Prague began to take shape between the 10th and 14th centuries.

Archeological excavations throughout Prague, ranging from the late Bronze and Iron ages to more recent times, have shed light on the city's development. Recent discoveries continue to challenge and refine our understanding of Prague's past.
