Managing the Complexities of Living in Idaho
Although Southeast Idaho has been my home since 1960, I often find myself at odds with the political environment in this state. As someone who aligns with a more liberal and progressive ideology, living in a region known for its conservative climate can sometimes feel like an adjustment. Nonetheless, the people here are genuinely kind-hearted, even if their political views might appear misguided to others.

While certain parts of the state, particularly the western and northern regions, tend to be more balanced, the southeastern and southern parts often prove more politically eccentric. Nevertheless, rich in traditional friendliness, Idaho doesn’t lack for folks who are ready to lend a helping hand. Despite the political turmoil, living here still comes with benefits.
One notable issue is the political landscape, which often features small pockets of Californians who move here to escape the challenges of their former state. They bring their own brand of challenges, re-establishing their beliefs and sometimes perpetuating the insular mentality in rural areas where they settle.
Living and Economic Landscape
Idaho’s draw lies not only in its political climate but also in its cost of living, particularly with its low housing costs. However, such economic advantages are often offset by the region's predominantly low wages. A substantial proportion of residents here live comfortably on salaries around $30,000 a year. Unlike many wealthy individuals, my own financial situation is modest, yet I enjoy the perks of living in a spacious and affordable house on half an acre.
While the living arrangements are favorable, the state’s economic condition presents a significant challenge. Housing costs have doubled in a short span without corresponding wage increases, creating financial strain for many. The job market is also not robust, with limited opportunities for employment.
Quality of Life
Life in Idaho comes with its share of difficulties, such as the notorious congestion on the roads. Traffic is notorious, and one often finds themselves behind drivers who travel at dramatically slower speeds than the posted limits. This can lead to dangerous situations, with vehicles driving as much as 10-15 miles under the speed limit on busy roads, causing significant frustration for all.
Another significant downside is the political landscape. Idaho has not seen significant progressive changes, especially when it comes to allowing horse racing tracks, a cultural tradition that faced shutdown. This stagnation can further discourage residents from embracing more progressive policies and laws.
Final Thoughts
While living in Idaho presents certain challenges, especially in terms of economic and political conditions, it is not without its benefits. The warm-hearted and welcoming nature of the people offers a counterbalance to the political struggles and economic hurdles.
