What better time than last year to visit Mexico and immerse oneself in the vibrant culture and scenic landscapes? During our trip, we met an ex-student in Swansea, Wales; a family among the historic Westminster Abbey; and another ex-student on a remote road in outback Australia. From receiving a personal tour of the chapel at the USAF Academy to getting a ride in a police car in St Petersburg to post a parcel home, these experiences are etched in memory. These instances of kindness and the stories exchanged during our conversations about language, law enforcement, and local customs have left an indelible mark on our journey.
Road Trip to the Southern Tip of Africa
Our adventure in South Africa was unlike any other, marked with meticulous planning and the excitement of a lifetime journey. Months in advance, Ray, Roelf, and I started plotting our unique December '86 trip, which was to cover a vast territory from the Garden Route to Cape Town and beyond. The anticipation was immense, fueled by the thrill of the journey and the impending adventure.
A Journey Through Time and Culture
The route took us through Johannesburg, sprouted during the gold rush in 1886, and past Heidelberg, another gold mining town. From there, we crossed into the Orange Free State and passed through Bethlehem, named after the biblical city due to its wheat-growing area. The journey was not just geographical; it was also cultural and historical, as we learned about the Basotho people and their traditional way of life.
The road trip was a blend of adventure and serendipity. Passing through Ficksburg, a Free State town known for its cherry festivals, we found ourselves as the first customers at a Wimpy shop. Along the way, we encountered Basotho men riding their sturdy ponies, a unique and picturesque scene that added to our adventure. Each stop provided a new layer of insight, making the journey a memorable one.
