Is Salford Safe for Visitors and Residents?

Throughout my 20-year stint at Salford Quays, which involved approximately 4,568 visits, I have not encountered any incidents of murder. In fact, the likelihood of being murdered in Salford is about as low as the chance of being murdered anywhere in the UK, which is very close to zero.

Safeguarding Against Crime

Understanding the Crime Rate
The Manchester Evening News reported on the crime statistics for Salford, indicating two homicides and 13 cases of attempted murder over the 12 months up to September 2015. This translates to a rate of 6.2 murderous crimes per 100,000 people. While this figure is relatively high compared to the national average, it still represents a vanishingly small risk for the average citizen. In fact, 6.2 per 100,000 equates to just 0.0062 of the resident population.

Common Concerns

Murder and Notorious Gangs
The majority of these cases involve individuals who were not typical residents but rather notorious gang leaders involved in feuds. If you avoid such individuals, your chances of becoming a victim are extremely slim. Personally, as a queer wheelchair user who walks around alone at night, I have never encountered any issues in Salford.

The Nice Side of Salford

Safe Neighborhoods and Amenities
If you're visiting the area around the University of Salford, you can rest assured that this is the safer part of the city. Contrary to popular belief, the main risks are more likely to come from overindulgence in alcohol at the Student Union rather than any actual danger.

Personal Encounter with Crime

Walking Approaches and Incidents
On rare occasions, some children have shouted "baldy" at me, and once, a graffiti artist looked at me disapprovingly because I wasn't appreciating his work. These were the only negative experiences I had during my 20 years in Salford Quays. As for more serious crimes, I attribute the few reported incidents involving a notorious gang leader to the very small probability of such events.
