In major cities like Seattle, summer temperatures rarely exceed the 90s, and you can count on sunshine from mid-May through mid-September. This climate is a refreshing escape from the oppressive heat found in other parts of the country, making it a true haven for residents and visitors alike.
Islands and Natural Abundance
My experience living on Hat Island, conveniently renamed Gedney, is a testament to the natural beauty and unique lifestyle of this area. My cabin is nestled among fir trees, where pairs of eagles make their home. Green-winged swallows return every year, adding a delightful touch of nature's serenity to the area. Woodpeckers, robins, and rabbits provide a lively mix of wildlife. Even the coastal dog that visits my cabin brings a charming, personalized touch to the tranquility.
Making Wine from Blackberries
One of the most delightful aspects of life on Hat Island is the joy of making wine from our abundant blackberries. In fact, the guy on the golf course has a couple of stills, showcasing the island's unique craftsmanship and community spirit. We also host our annual Oktoberfest on the first Sunday in September, celebrating the harvest and the island's natural bounty.
Natural Beauty and Outdoor Activities
The beaches of Hat Island are teeming with clams, providing unlimited entertainment for digging and cooking. The golf course, which is PGA-rated and doesn't require reservations, is a true paradise for golf enthusiasts. The golfers simply show up at the honor box and play, making it a cherished recreational spot.
Island Living – A Unique Experience
Living on Hat Island is a unique experience, as it has no stores, no hotels, and no other shopping facilities. The island is accessible only by boat or private ferry, a truly private retreat. There are only two vending machines in the marina, and they were last serviced following a biblical event. The speed limit is a mere 15 mph, ensuring a serene and peaceful environment for residents and visitors alike.
Community Pride and Shared History
One of the reasons I still love this place is the sense of provincialism among those who have lived here for multiple decades. Despite the rapid growth and increasing desirability, there is a unique pride in being a longtime resident. The region has seen significant changes over the years, from the early days of the Boeing crisis to the Beatles' visits and the space race. These stories create a shared bond among the residents.
