Embracing Multilingual Harmony: My Experience as a Tamilian in Karnataka and Beyond
Introduction
As a Tamilian, my linguistic comfort lies in proficiency with Kannada and Telugu, intellectual understanding with Kannada, and emotional connection with both. However, it's important to recognize that being a Tamilian or belonging to any other linguistic group in India is not a matter of division but of shared identity. We are Indians first and foremost, and our region, language, and background are mere aspects of our diverse existence.
Reflection on Linguistic Unity
I believe in moving forward, transcending linguistic divides. As we progress in the 21st century, it's essential to embrace a unified perspective regarding our composite culture. Jai Hind! Bharat Mata Ki Jai!
The Impact of Living in Mysore
Opening with personal experiences, my journey in Mysore was a defining chapter. Back in 2006, when I joined Infosys, my relocation to Mysore was initially met with uncertainty. The media hype surrounding the Cauvery water disputes between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka wasn't something I looked forward to experiencing.
('Nanjangud) marked the start of my new life. My uncle, who accompanied me during travel, suggested offering prayers at the Shiva templeāa gesture that calmed my nerves. Upon reaching Mysore, I felt a sense of belonging to a warm community that welcomed me with open arms.
Mysore has an unparalleled charm with its love for food and cultural festivals. Our proximity to Kannada culture deepened our bonds. Living in Vijaya Nagar, our rental house, we enjoyed cricket, local delicacies, and festivals. Conversations with locals, like that with Pramod's mother, instilled a deeper understanding and appreciation of Kannada language and culture.
These experiences in Mysore equipped me with a nuanced perspective on regional issues and encouraged me to see beyond stereotypes. The unique bonding and cultural absorption in Mysore have been unmatchable, regardless of whether I lived in Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, or Trivandrum.
Embracing Multicity Experiences
The emotions associated with leaving Mysore were palpable. The city held a special place in my heart. Exploring the cultural capital of Karnataka wasn't just a holiday; it was an immersion into different lifestyles and traditions.
Mysore, with its offerings in food and breathtaking landscapes like Thimbum hills, stands out. The Chicken biriyani, a local delicacy, exemplifies the richness of Mysorean cuisine. These experiences in Mysore have endeared Kannadigas to me, fostering a deep and lasting bond based on mutual respect and understanding.
Conclusion
No language or city defines us; it's all about our perception and the environment we create. A true traveler embraces diverse cultures, navigates challenges, and forges meaningful connections. Love and respect are the cornerstones of all these experiences. How one travels impacts how one is treated. I offer love and respect, and I get a lot in return.
There's nothing inherently superior or inferior about a language or a city. We define our experiences and our relationships based on our interactions and our openness to understanding different cultures.
