A Lifelong Journey with Birds: From Childhood Fascination to Global Adventuring

Many individuals develop a fascination with birds during their formative years, often as young as 5 or 6. This natural curiosity can stem from an initial love for nature or from engaging in activities like birdwatching, photography, or environmental conservation. If you're interested in getting involved with birds, I'd be happy to offer some information and tips!

My Childhood with Birds

I've always had a deep fondness for birds. It began in my toddler years, when my father and I would observe the backyard birds and attempt to identify them. He taught me about the robin's foraging behavior, the difference between the shorter-tailed starling and the longer-tailed grackle, and even gave birds nicknames—like "the sergeant bird" for the red-winged blackbird due to its distinctive markings.

Our love for birds extended beyond just observing them. Even the introduced house sparrow caught our attention. Known for its bold and belligerent nature, we relished in its aggressive interactions in the city streets over who would become the chosen mate.

Adult Ventures into Birding

As an adult, my passion for birds took me to new heights. I joined both my state’s Audubon society and the national organization, where I was introduced to a wonderful mentor who expanded my knowledge beyond birds. We would 'slow down' as the sun grew higher in the sky, learning about the local plants, wildflowers, fungi, and even noting passing snakes and frogs. We even delved into geological musings, agreeing to save that for the next lifetime.

Expanding Horizons

The love for birds led me to places I never imagined visiting. From a four-hour pelagic trip off the coast of Maine to observe puffins, to Machias Seal Island in Canada for nesting puffins, and even to the Grand Tortugas for magnificent frigate birds. The love for birds also took me to the Florida Everglades, where I stood toe-to-snout to photograph an alligator amidst the wood storks and roseate spoonbills.

A special flight to the Florida Keys brought me an extraordinary experience at the Grand Tortugas, where I witnessed magnificent frigate birds. A cruise with the World Parrot Trust took me to Honduras, Belize, and Mexico, where I released a military macaw back into the wild. The ultimate dream came true when I visited the Galápagos Islands to see the blue-footed boobies up close.

Bringing Birds Closer to Home

In the new millennium, my passion for birds evolved further. I started a small private parrot rescue, where the love for birds now extends indoors as well. Birds no longer just roam free outside; they now have a home in our household, bringing their beauty and joy into our daily lives.
